Amazon Smart Plug 6A Review, Almost Perfect

Plug image

It was a prime day on Amazon India. While looking for some good tech deals, I found a quite cheap Amazon Smart Plug. So I did what a fellow tech enthusiast would do: bag the deal before it ended.

I went without researching anything, I didn’t look up if it was gated within the Alexa app (I had my doubts), if it could track live electricity usage, if I would be able to link it with Google Assistant or Apple Homekit, or has features like a timer & more. Don’t worry, I am not going to bore you more than I need to so let’s start with my in-depth Amazon Smart Plug Review.

Quick Navigation To The Different Parts Of the Article

Let me give you a brief overview if you, too, are in a hurry.

Pros

  • Reliable 2.4 Ghz Connectivity
  • Easy To Setup
  • Great For Users Already Invested in Amazon’s Ecosystem
  • Ability To Set Routine via the Alexa app
  • Power State retention
  • Small Size
  • Convenient LED Indicator to Show Live Connection Status
  • Easy To Reset & Reconfigure

Cons

  • No 5 Ghz Support
  • No Support For IFTT, Google Assistant, & Apple Homekit
  • Not Suitable For Outdoor Use (No IP Rating)
  • No Energy Monitoring
  • White Color Prone To Dust & Dirt

Snagged during an Amazon Prime Day sale in India, the Amazon Smart Plug has proven itself as a reliable, no-frills automation tool for Alexa-centric homes over six months of testing.

Its standout features include seamless Alexa integration for voice commands and routines, rock-solid 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connectivity with quick post-outage reconnection, and a compact design that avoids blocking adjacent sockets. While the white finish attracts dust in gritty environments (like attics or workshops), performance remains unaffected.

However, it’s not for everyone: skip if you need cross-platform support (no Google/Apple compatibility), energy monitoring, or high-power appliance use (opt for Amazon’s 16A version). Ideal for Alexa loyalists with Echo devices, its manual override button, clear LED status lights, and competitive pricing make it a practical pick for indoor, low-wattage needs. Just don’t expect weatherproofing or third-party ecosystem flexibility. A solid 4/5 for simplicity and reliability within Amazon’s walled garden.

Unboxing

The Smart Plug arrived in an easy-to-open, small, & minimalistic Box. Inside, there’s a QR code for a quick setup, but if you’re familiar with the setup process, you can set it up without it. The package includes minimal documentation and, of course, the Amazon 6A Smart Plug. It was a pretty neat unboxing experience without any unnecessary waste or fluff.

Build & Design

build

The construction of the plug is solid; it feels good in hand and should survive the rigours of your normal routine as mine has for the last 6 months. I appreciate its compact design, which prevents it from blocking nearby sockets or switches. Whether plugged directly into a wall outlet or used with an extension board, it fits seamlessly without any hassle.

Size: 1.81” x 2.81” x 1.46” (46 mm x 71.3 mm x 37 mm)

Weight: 104 grams

The only downside I found in terms of design is that the white finish on this Amazon smart plug tends to accumulate dirt easily. If you’re using it in a dusty environment like a barn, attic, or workshop, it may turn yellow faster than expected. That said, over six months of testing in various indoor locations, I found that while aesthetics took a hit, performance remained flawless. The dust didn’t interfere with its functionality at all.

  • Short Verdict: Prone to getting dirty, Doesn’t block access to switches next to it, Compact size

Specifications & Features

Like most smart plugs, the Amazon Smart Plug is designed to simplify your life with a reliable remote control. What impressed me most was the flawless connectivity; it always maintained a connection to Wi-Fi without a single network drop. Even after power outages, it reconnected to my router almost instantly. This was a refreshing change from my experience with other devices like the TP-Link Wi-Fi extender. However, it doesn’t support 5 GHz bandwidth connectivity as it usually has a short range compared to 2.4 GHz.

  • Short Verdict: Solid Connection to Wi-Fi, no 5Ghz Support, Quick Response with Minimum Delays

Convenient Button & Connection Indicator

The only time I ever had any problem while reviewing my Amazon smart plug was during an internet outage. Thankfully, a dedicated button on the left side allowed me to operate the plug whenever that happened. Also, a convenient LED indicator at the front glows steadily blue when connected, pulses during pairing, and turns red if there’s a connection issue. Overall, it makes diagnosing & setting up my smart plug a breeze.

  • Short Verdict: Convenient Button on the Side to manually operate the plug during Internet Outage, Live Connection Status Indicator

Voice Control, Routine, & Zone Setup

alexa routine

The standout feature of this smart plug isn’t just its remote connectivity, it’s the seamless Alexa integration. Once paired with the Alexa app, you can control it with voice commands from anywhere in your home or even remotely!

Set up custom routines to automate your devices; imagine your lamp switching on at sunset or your fan turning off at bedtime. It’s a game-changer for simplifying daily tasks, but there’s a caveat: avoid using it with high-power appliances like geysers or coffee makers. For those, Amazon offers a 16A variant, though keep in mind that neither version is IP-rated, so avoid damp or outdoor spaces.

Alexa’s zoning feature lets you organize devices by office, bedroom, and so on for effortless control. While you can add non-Amazon gadgets to these zones, I haven’t tested third-party compatibility extensively, so temper your expectations there.

Amazon Smart Plug Review: Final Verdict, Should You Buy It?

At its current price, the Amazon Smart Plug is a no-brainer for Alexa loyalists, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Here’s who should (and shouldn’t) take the plunge:

Skip It If You:
❌ Need cross-platform compatibility: No Apple HomeKit or Google Assistant support.
❌ Own a mixed-brand smart home: Struggles with non-Amazon IoT devices (I haven’t tested third-party compatibility & in app user experience extensively).
❌ Use high-power appliances: Stick to the 16A version for devices like geysers or heaters.

Buy It If You:
✅ Live in the Amazon ecosystem: Own Echo speakers, Fire Sticks, or other Alexa gadgets.
✅ Prioritize Alexa integration: Voice control and routines work flawlessly.
✅ Value reliability over features: Solid performance, sturdy build, and competitive pricing.

So the bottom line is, this plug nails the basics for Alexa users: simple setup, flawless connectivity, and hands-free convenience. While it lacks cross-platform flexibility and high-power versatility, its reliability and seamless Amazon integration make it a winner for the right user.
